As spring break quickly approaches, students, and even faculty, are mentally checking out. For some, spring break is a time to relax at home with family, or a trip to the beach with friends. Wherever this mid-term break takes you, it’s a perfect time to stay conscientious of your health and wellness.
If you plan on going back home, this is a great way to relax, forget school, and enjoy being active. No school means less stress like deadlines, studying, work, and meetings that all result in dreadful all-nighters, excess caffeine, and late night snacking. So take this time to catch up on some sleep (8 hours per night is recommended) and to mentally unwind. As the weather begins to warm up, take advantage of the outdoors and take your dogs for walks or go running with a friend. Spring break is a great way to revamp (or restart) your New Year’s resolution by taking your exercise outdoors.
If this break takes you down south to the water, then this is a cool way to kick back and have some fun with friends. However, having fun takes energy and fuel. Be sure to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Being seaside brings you tasty fish selections, and in-season fruits options, such as honeydew, limes, strawberries, mango, pineapple, and oranges. Along with this variety of fresh produce, this time of year brings vegetable options such as asparagus, spinach, broccoli, lettuces, and green beans straight to your plate. Although it’s tempting, try to go easy on the sugars, salts, and alcohol, since they tend to dehydrate the body. Remember: moderation is key. Being in the sun all day tires your body out just as much, so drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen to prevent heat exhaustion and sunburns. The point of spring break is to take a timeout from your stressful life. Even though it’s great to go out with friends, put aside some time everyday to go relax outside, for a jog along the beach, or walk around the local stores and markets.
Spring semester’s mid-term break is an opportunity to rest and shake away stress. When you keep these tips in mind to keep you safe and healthy during the vacation, you will return fully rejuvenated to finish the semester off strong!
