Yes, it’s true, the leaves are beginning to change colors and fall to the ground and temperatures are cooling down as we get deeper and deeper into first semester. All you want to do is snuggle up in a blanket and hold a warm Pumpkin Spice Latte from none other than, Starbucks. However, before you spend $4.00-$5.00 on one of these holiday favorites I want to inform you on how sugar is actually in a delicious Pumpkin Spice Latte. If you were to order a tall (12oz) there would be 39g of sugar in this 300 calorie drink. If you ordered a grande (16oz), there would be 50g of sugar with 380 calories. And if you went a little crazy and got a venti (20oz), there would be 64g of sugar and 470 calories in that drink!
According to the American Heart Association, the recommended daily sugar intake a woman should consume 25g (6 teaspoons). For men, the recommended amount is 37.5g (9 teaspoons). So, even if you got a tall Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks, you would be consuming over the recommended daily amount in one drink. However, I did not just ruin the holiday season for you. You can still bundle up with your blanket watching leaves fall outside while drinking a healthier option. Here are some recipes I found on the greatest research tool known as, Pinterest:
The Ultimate Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte
Yields: 1 latte
Make your own PSL at home for a fraction of the cost and calories! This recipe is easily doubled or tripled to serve more.
-1 cup (240mL) nonfat milk
-1 tbsp (15g) pumpkin purée
-4 drops vanilla crème stevia, or adjusted to taste
-⅛ tsp ground cinnamon
-tiny pinch ground nutmeg
-tiny pinch ground ginger
-¾ cup (180mL) extra strong coffee
-Add the milk and pumpkin to a small pot. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a whisk, until the mixture begins to simmer. Add in the stevia, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Whisk the mixture until it becomes frothy.
Add the coffee to a large mug, and pour the milk mixture on top.
Notes: Any milk, including all non-dairy varieties, may be substituted for the nonfat milk.
-Any sweetener may be substituted for the vanilla crème stevia. Adjust the amount to suit your tastes.
-Two shots of espresso may be substituted for the extra strong coffee. To prepare the extra strong coffee, add twice the amount of coffee grounds to the coffee maker as is required.
