At Miami, most students seem at least somewhat concerned about maintaining a healthy life, either by aiming to get in their daily servings of fruit and veggies, going to the rec, or playing a sport, to name a few. So how about taking another step in that direction by trying to eat local and sustainable, without detouring from your daily routine?
I know a lot of us also shop at the MacCracken Market, which, among the normal groceries and snack food, has a wonderful selection of fresh fruits, veggies, and other healthy snacks and foods, and even some local goodies.
The Organic Farm at Bear Creek supplies a boatload of fresh soups, dressings, teas, jams, and more, to the MacCracken Market! I stock up at least once a week on my favs: “Hot Salsa & Gazpacho”, and their tomato and vegetable soups. Among these jarred products, they also have a mild salsa and a new Florentine soup. I literally eat the salsa by the spoonful, a jar is gone in two days! They are bursting with fresh, ripe tomato flavor, and packed with flavorful veggies and herbs.
So what are some of the benefits of eating food produced locally? First off, there’s a higher nutrient content, since the nutrients don’t have time to deplete. These were produced on a smaller farm, so you can trust the growers; therefore you’re supporting local farmers, and thus supporting the lovely Oxford community! You’re also keeping the environment in mind, since the food doesn’t have to travel far to get to its destination.
Next time you’re at MacCracken, check out their product rack, located on the side shelf next to the soups, in the middle aisle!
