We all crave something sweet now and then, and although we know ice cream, cakes, cookies and candies are not the most healthful options, we often indulge in them anyways. But did you know, when you’re craving sweet treats such as ice cream or candy, that it’s just the sugar that you’re craving? Well, how about choosing a food with more natural sugar in it, instead of all of the simple sugars and fattening additives in those sweet treats? A great option is choosing a fruit smoothie! Fruit smoothies have quite a bit of natural sugar that can satisfy your craving, while avoiding all of the fat of sweet treats.
So fruit smoothies are healthy then, right? Well not necessarily; Fruit smoothies can contain sugary juices and extra ingredients that can take away from their healthy content. When making a fruit smoothie, avoid using juice as a liquid base and instead choose water or coconut water, which keeps the fruity beverage much lower in sugar. Also try using non-fat yogurt in your smoothies to keep them healthier as well.
When choosing what fruit to put in your smoothies, try avoiding overly sugary fruits such as bananas which have 10 grams of sugar in just 3 ounces of them. Berries are known to have lower amounts of sugar, and are very popular for fruit smoothie flavors anyway! By following these tips, you are able to satisfy your sugar craving while keeping it healthy.
