The holiday season is the time of year when it gets colder and there is a lot of eating and parties that are often centered around food and cooking. Learning how to make the right decisions can help keep you feeling healthy! Here are five recommendations to staying healthy during the holidays.
1. Do Treat Yourself!
If you have that special cake or pie that you love every year, do have some! Try to only have a small serving size.
2. Take smaller bites and chew longer.
It takes 20 minutes for your body to register that it is full. Not only does taking smaller bites and chewing longer help slow down the amount of food you are eating, it also can lead to feeling like you have eaten more.
3. Fill up your plate once!
There’s so much food. And it’s everywhere! And you want to try a lot of it. Filling smaller portions of many types of food on one plate can help the accidental overeating. If you’re still hungry afterward or you want more food, I’d recommend filling up only half of a plate.
4. Use Colors!
Fill your plate up with lots of colors. The more variety of colors you have, the greater the amount of nutrition in it. Keeping a good variety of nutrients in the diet can help prevent getting a cold from the winter weather.
5. Homemade Cooking
Stay home and cook during the holidays! While going out to dinner is also a fun activity, staying home and cooking can lead to healthier food choices because you know what is going into your recipes.
